A Socio - Literary Organisation of the Bodo Nation
 


It was on 16th of November, 1952 that was the Bodo Sahitya Sabha, the vanguard of Bodo language and literature, was founded at Basugaon, in the district of Kokrajhar, Assam consisting of representatives of Assam, West Bengal, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura and Nepal in abroad. This event proved to be a turning point in the history of the Bodos as it brought a massive and overall awakening among the Bodo in a particular and the plains tribals of Bramhaputra Valley as a whole. After a few years, due to struggle and determination of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha, the Bodo language was introduced as a medium of instruction at primary level in 1963 and then at secondary level in 1968. Moreover, the Bodo language and literature has been recognized as one of the Modern Indian Language in several universities like Gauhati, Dibrugarh and other North-Eastern Universities. And in 1985, it has been recognized as an associate state official language of Assam. Now the language has attained a position of pride with the opening of the Post-Graduate Courses in Bodo language and literature in the University of Gauhati in 1996. Moreover under the aegis of the commission for Scientific and Technical terminology, HRD Ministry, the Govt. of India, the Bodo Sahitya Sabha is preparing more than forty thousand scientific and technical terms in Bodo language. Further, it is promised, the Sahitya Academy would accord "Bhasa Sonman" to the Bodo language and literature as an initial token of full-fledged recognition to it. Furthermore, the Govt. of India, in principle, has recognized the necessity of inclusion of the Bodo language and lterature in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India. Moreover the Bodo Sahitya Sabha has to its credit a large number of books on prose, poetry, drama, short story, novel, biography, travelogue, children's literature, criticism, a complete Bodo-English-Hindi Dictionary and has also started the project of translating the nternatonal classics. A Translation & Publication Sub-Committee has been constituted by the Bodo Sahtya Sabha for this purpose. In fact, the Bodo Sahitya Sabha has made a rapid stride and it has now manifold successes to its credit..

       

Emblem : What it Means?
Open Book :- At the base, there shall be an open book where “Boro Rao Geolangthwng” shall be written. The Book shall signify the treasure of Knowledge.

Snana Mandir :- There shall be the “Snana Mandir” of khaspur kingdom (at present in the District of Cashar, Assam) above the open book.The “Snana Mandir” shall signify the symbol of great Bodo Nation.

Khampha :- In both the side of the “Snana Mandir” there shall be ‘khampha’ (Pillar) on either side the victory Tomb of Dimapur and that shall signify the symbol of victorians great Bodo Nation.

Colour on Emblem :- The colour sky blue shall be painted on the “Snana Mandir” and “Khampha” which shall signify the universality as the sky embraces all the living beings in the univers without any differences.

Gasa :- There shall be a “Gasa” (Light) in the middle of the emblem and that shall signify the source of light.

Pea-Cock :- There shall be a pea-cock, the National Bird of India, by the side of “Gasa” which shall bear the significance of peace and integrity.
